Anemone virginiana (tall thimbleweed)

tall thimbleweed (quart)

Tall thimbleweed is an adaptable, erect woodland plant from the buttercup family that is typically found in rocky or open wooded slopes. It does best in full sun to part shade, but can tolerate full shade as well. It can grow up to 2' tall and at the top in May, produces a delicate white star. Its common name refers to the thimble-shaped spikes at the center of its flowers that contain its seeds and blow away in the wind once ripe. It can tolerate deer, drought, and rocky dry soils, though it prefers sandy moist soil. The genus name refers to the Greek name for wind. It is a great spring flower for any woodland garden. Note: Plant parts are poisonous and toxic if eaten in large quantities. Deer usually avoid it.

Tall thimbleweed is native to central and eastern U.S. Its native habitat is woodlands, forest edges, prairies, meadows, and fields. Attracts native bees and butterflies.
