Smooth aster, named for its smooth-to-the-touch leaves, grows a robust 2–4' tall and blooms with beautiful lavender-blue flowers in August, September, and October. It does well in full sun, sandy loam soil, with dry to medium soil moisture. 

Smooth aster is native to Canada, the United States, and Mexico, growing in fields, open woods, and along roadsides in rocky or dry soil and full sun. It is pollinated by many native bees and attracts butterflies and birds. It is a larval host for the pearl crescent butterfly.
