'Major Wheeler' is a selection of native honeysuckle known for its showy masses of red trumpet-shaped blooms beginning in late Spring and continuing intermittently through the Fall. It is considered the longest-blooming variety of native honeysuckle. A fast grower that covers trellises or fences, reaching 6–10' tall with support. Can tolerate many growing conditions but does best with full sun and lots of moisture. More tolerant of humidity and resistant to powdery mildew than other varieties. It's also deer resistant and a hummingbird favorite!
Coral honeysuckle is common in eastern North America, most commonly in coastal habitats. It is used by many animals for food, most commonly used for nectar by butterflies and hummingbirds. It attracts bees, hummingbirds, moths, and even songbirds. Ruby-throated hummingbirds and insects pollinate the flowers from mid-Spring to Fall. Host plant for caterpillars of Spring aqures and snowberry clearwing moths. Birds such as purple finch and the American robin eat the red berries.
